2024-25 AUDITION FAQs

Frequently Asked Questions about 2024-25 Auditions

Why should I audition?

If you are passionate about singing and expanding your music education, then you should definitely consider auditioning for the

Youth Chorus. Our singers come from different schools and diverse backgrounds, and enjoy being in a supportive environment with peers who share their love for music. The Youth Chorus is part of the greater Cleveland Orchestra Chorus family, and are encouraged to continue their musical journey through high school and even into adulthood.

I have never taken any instrumental or vocal lessons. May I still audition?

Yes! We encourage any student who loves to sing and is eager to enhance their knowledge of music to audition for the Youth Chorus. Private music lessons are not required to participate in any of the Cleveland Orchestra Choruses, and most choristers do not have any professional musical training.

When and where will auditions be held?

Auditions will take place on September 5th at University Circle United Methodist Church. Interested singers should complete the ONLINE AUDITION APPLICATION.

How long will the audition last?

The audition takes about 10 minutes to complete.

What will I be expected to do during my audition?

Auditionees should try to relax and not get too nervous. Our directors are welcoming and will do their best to make you feel comfortable. Also, keep in mind that there is no such thing as a "perfect audition." Making some mistakes will not automatically exclude you from being accepted into the chorus. Please note that a collaborative pianist will be present to play accompaniment as you sing.

Students will be asked to complete the following:

  • Bring 3 copies of your solo piece with you (one for yourself, one for the directors, and one for the collaborative pianist)

  • Sing a solo: The Cleveland Orchestra Youth Chorus sings a variety of repertoire, though much of what we perform is classical in nature. If you have a classical piece that you’ve prepared, please share that with us, but we would be happy to hear audition songs from other genres (including musical theater and pop) as well. What’s most important is that we can hear you perform something that best shows us who you are as a singer.

  • Sight read melodic and rhythmic exercises

  • Short exercises to assess a variety of vocal production skills

I don't have a solo that I'm preparing. Can you offer any solo recommendations?

Yes! Students are welcome to choose their own solo pieces. However, we understand that you may need some suggestions. Please visit our SOLO ASSISTANCE page. There, we have a variety of solo selections for different voice ranges, which include downloadable files of the music and accompaniment tracks. Please note, that these pieces are suggestions only and are not required. If you are not sure what part you sing, you will also find a video tutorial from Mr. Singer entitled, "What Voice Part Should You Sing?".

How do I schedule an audition?

The best place to start is by visiting the AUDITION GUIDELINES webpage, accessible at the top of this page. There you will find simple step-by-step instructions to complete the audition process from start to finish.
